Thousands show up for Tsutaya Bookstore opening

The newly opened Tsutaya Bookstore attracted huge crowds on its first day in Phnom Penh’s Aeon Mall (1) Phnom Penh. Following the official opening ceremony, attended by the Japanese Ambassador, H.E. Ueno Atsushi, public access started at 12pm and the new store’s operators had to implement an entry system as long queues of excited customers formed outside the store.

“Our opening day really couldn’t have gone better,” said Kim Leang Kean, Managing Director of ULS, who operates the Tsutaya Bookstore franchise in Cambodia. “More than 4,000 people visited the store today and their response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Founded in Osaka, Japan in 1983, there are now more than 800 outlets of the iconic Japanese bookstore brand across Japan, China, Taiwan and Malaysia. The new Tsutaya Bookstore Cambodia brings the brand’s unmistakable blend of books, lifestyle goods and relaxed café society to Cambodia for the first time.

“Our aim from the start has been to bring a world-class experience to Cambodia,” said Mr. Kean, who wants shoppers to really take their time and explore. “Every visitor’s experience is unique. Everyone will find something of interest. There are so many wonderful things just waiting to be discovered here.”

Tsutaya Bookstore Cambodia is now open every day from 9 am to 10 pm on the first floor of Aeon Mall (1) Phnom Penh.
