Phnom Penh, Cambodia, August 19, 2024: Following the resounding success of last year’s Leadership for Good Summit, Sequoia Group and MR Training and Jobs Center (MRTJC) were thrilled to announce this pivotal event. Themed “Navigating Talent Management, Succession Planning, and Leadership Development in a Digital Era,” the summit aims to bolster Cambodia’s human capital development.
The summit, held on August 17th at the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh, was graced by H.E. Hun Many, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of the Ministry of Civil Service. He provided strategic insights into human capital development and emphasized the critical need for talent cultivation to fuel Cambodia’s economic growth in the years ahead.
This gathering brought together executive leaders, HR professionals, and industry thought leaders for a day of dynamic discussions and action-learning workshops centered on practical strategies for talent and leadership development, as well as succession planning.
“Building a robust human capital base is vital for achieving this goal”, stated Mr. Hem Sayon, Director of MR Training and Jobs Center. “HR leaders play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation, driving succession planning, and developing leadership pipelines to ensure organizations stay competitive and agile in a rapidly evolving market.”
The timing of this summit is particularly significant as Cambodia advances its digital transformation. In an age of rapid technological change, new industries, sectors, and opportunities are emerging. The future of work requires a new set of cognitive, people, technological, and management skills. Equipping the Cambodian workforce with these skills to navigate this landscape is imperative for the nation to build a dynamic and resilient workforce, expand economic opportunity, and transform Cambodia into a high-income country in the next twenty-five years in line with the Royal Government’s Cambodia Vision 2050.
The summit’s comprehensive agenda featured a panel discussion titled “Uncovering the Essential Competencies for Tomorrow’s Business Landscape: Developing the Future Leader,” with contributions from Neak Oknha Sear Rithy, Chairman of Worldbridge Group of Companies, Jacqueline Wong, Founder and Managing Director of Sequoia Group, Singapore and Jimmy Ong, Managing Partner of Nucleus Advisory from Malaysia.
“The competition for top talent is fierce, and the workplace is evolving at breakneck speed due to technological advancements” notes Jacqueline Wong, Managing Director and Founder of Sequoia Group. “HR leaders are faced with the urgency to upskill and reskill the current workforce with future skills in mind, and at the same time having to identify, nurture and groom future leaders for the organization. All these imply that we need to foster a learning culture, one that embodies a growth mindset, adaptive, agile and highly engaging. Through our partnership with MRTJC, Sequoia is looking forward to sharing and contextualizing our people and leadership and organization development expertise, so as to contribute to the human capital development efforts that the Royal Cambodia Government has set out to achieve in the Pentagonal Strategy. We sincerely hope this summit will provide attendees with the opportunity to unpack these challenges, reframe them as opportunities, and explore practical solutions they can adapt to their specific workplaces.”
Further enriching the summit were keynote speeches on promoting human capital development as the cornerstone of sustainable growth and the critical importance of talent management. Presentations on talent management trends and the unique challenges and opportunities within the APAC region were also offered.
Interactive workshops on fostering an engaging leadership culture and facilitating impactful talent conversations at the board level allowed attendees to dive deeper into the challenges faced by HR leaders and explore how they can assume a more strategic role within their organizations to facilitate leadership development and succession planning.
Post-summit, four specialized masterclasses on people, talent, leadership, and organization development provided leaders with the in-depth knowledge, tools, and processes to strengthen their strategies for business and people transformation.
The summit also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sequoia Group and MR Training and Jobs Center (MRTJC). This MoU outlines collaboration in five key areas: People and Talent Development, Leadership and Organization Development, Sustainability, Communities of Practice (CoP) for HR Professionals, and Knowledge Co-Creation in areas of mutual interest. This MoU will solidify the shared dedication to fulfilling the human capital development needs of both the public and private sectors.
The Cambodia HR Summit took place on August 17th, from 8am to 5pm at Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh.
